The interview & civics test.

The naturalization interview is the last major step before the oath. Knowing what happens makes it far less stressful.

What happens at the interview

A USCIS officer reviews your N-400 with you under oath, confirms your answers are still accurate, and administers the English and civics tests. Bring your green card, your interview notice, and any documents USCIS requested. We tell you exactly what to bring for your specific case.

The English test

The officer assesses your ability to speak, read, and write basic English through the interview itself and short reading/writing exercises. Certain applicants qualify for age- and residence-based exemptions, or for testing in their native language.

The civics test

The civics test covers U.S. history and government. The officer asks questions from the official study list, and you answer orally. Free study materials are available from USCIS study resources. We'll point you to the version that applies to your filing.

The oath ceremony

Once approved, you take the Oath of Allegiance โ€” sometimes the same day, often at a later ceremony โ€” and receive your Certificate of Naturalization. At that point you're a U.S. citizen and can apply for a U.S. passport.

How we help you prepare

We review your N-400 with you before the interview, flag anything an officer is likely to probe (travel history, tax filings, prior records), confirm your document list, and make sure you walk in ready.
